I have a B.A. in Music, Flute from Converse College. I started playing the flute when I was nine years old and have played in the 30+ years since. I have also taken lessons in clarinet, piano, and voice.
In elementary school, I tried to compose a piece for recorder. It didn’t sound like anything I wanted to play. The experience was so frustrating that I gave up composing until my mid-30s when I realized that writing modern classical art songs is a way to combine my talent in writing with my love of music. Now, I compose for flute, voice, and anything else I feel like trying. I believe that music is a benefit to anyone. Whether someone wants to become proficient at an instrument or only dabble in music theory, I am delighted whenever a person learns any musical skill. |

When creating a worship service set list, I consider what theology a song teaches, as well as its emotional impact. I particularly enjoy creating set lists that create an emotional journey related to a theme.
Make a Recital Program
At one recital, a mix of vocal and flute music, the theme was autumn. By combining traditional repertoire with my own compositions, I had 45 minutes of music representing themes connected to autumn.
For my first vocal recital, I wrote a story and used music as narrative and plot devices.
