November 20: Why Do Animals Have White Butts?

I’m sitting in Salt Lake City Airport. I flew out of Jackson at 7:20 p.m., got here around 8:00. I’m flying out at 11:45.

I’m tired. I was awake at 6:00 a.m. Up at 7:00. Left by 9:15 with Wes and Isaiah. We spent the day in town.

At the post office, I saw a white bulldog. He was waiting to be adopted. His lower jaw was broken and he had a bar around it. He was an interesting-looking dog and very friendly. I would have adopted him.

There was a service dog on the flight from JAC to SLC.

I’m getting too emotional. I almost cried when I left Wes and Isaiah. I hugged them both and felt better.

We brought my car into town today and it will overwinter at the town shop.

On the way into town, we saw bighorn sheep. I got some pictures.

I want to know why so many animals have light-colored, often white or yellow-orange, backsides.

November 17: Elk Bugling Is Unsettling

This morning, I walked outside and heard screeching. It was elk bugling. They make the sound with ivory in their back teeth. I like a coyote howl better. It’s a good thing elk don’t usually bugle at night. That would be a creepy sound!

This morning, I saw a rabbit under the porch of Cabin 2. Tracks were all over. Rabbits dig holes and are a nuisance around habitations. Isaiah shot him. Isaiah skinned and gutted the rabbit and now he will be part of supper. He has very little meat on him. I liked seeing all the insides - fascinating.

Shot today. Hit a few times, but still high or low mostly. Isaiah says I’d be more accurate with a smaller gun.

Isaiah and I went to pick up Keith when he came back from California. He never showed, but he took a ranch truck and went to class without telling anyone, so I guess he made it back okay.

Isaiah and I ate at a Thai restaurant and had salmon. The sesame brittle with dessert was wonderful.

I’m trying to think of a way to get Farley to come close to the barn after supper so that we don’t have to go calling her all the time. Farley doesn’t like to hang around the barn because of Alex.

All of us went into town this afternoon. We were back before 7:30, but I think we all were beat.

On the way in, we saw a bison scratching his head on a sign post. He was none too happy that we interrupted him by driving by, and he gave us a mean look.

Wes 2 is sick. We convinced him not to work after lunch. I’ve never seen someone’s eyes speak so plainly. “I’m sick,” they said.

I helped screw in more Trex boards for the pool deck.

I started cleaning a room upstairs to move into. It’s too cold to stay down here with only a space heater.

I bought Farley nearly $75 worth of food. I hope it lasts him most of the winter. I’m trying to fatten him up. If he runs out, hopefully, I can find cheaper food. I won’t be as concerned about him when he has his winter fat.

This morning, we sprayed the cabins with a “stain” of motor oil, hydraulic fluid, polyurethane, and paint thinner.

This afternoon, it snowed.

I got Farley into my room this evening, but I’m letting him outside tonight. I have no water inside for him. It’s getting cold. I hope he stays warm. I feel bad putting him out, but I don’t want to be up with him for half the night. I want him to get comfortable in here before he spends the night.

October 23: I Make It to Montana

Monday, October 23, 2006

Yesterday, I got up at 5:45 and by 7:15, Isaiah and I were pulling out of the headgate, heading to Yellowstone. We went through Grand Teton National Park where I got a national parks pass.

The drive through Grand Teton was nice. We saw no animals, but stopped a few places or drove through to see what was there.

At Yellowstone, they were advising snow tires or chains. I have neither, but we went in anyway. We saw geese and bison and elk. I drove on snow and ice for the first time. Then I let Isaiah drive so that I could look around.

We stopped at a cascade and Old Faithful. Other than that, we either made quick stops or just drove through to see what was there. There are many places I want to spend several hours at.

Old Faithful wasn’t too impressive. It is just a lot of steam that floats out. Another geyser close by shoots straight up. I liked that one better. The Castle geyser and the one close by were having a competition to see who could boil the biggest bubbles. I liked them; they made me laugh.

We went to Gardner, Montana so that I could go to Montana (and to get gas).

At one point, we followed a bison down the road. He walked slowly, almost exactly in the center of the road. A bald eagle flew over us. We saw a rabbit.

All we wanted to see was a bear and a wolf. We saw neither.

We got back to the ranch just after 9:00 and I went straight to bed, exhausted.
Keith’s being a pain. He tells everyone what to do and does little work himself. He’s too busy sticking his nose into everyone else’s business. I try to pick my battles and let the little things go, but there comes a point where I just do what I think is best and he can get over it.

Isaiah said he’d watch my back this winter so Keith won’t make my life miserable. It’s good to know he’s there and willing to defend me. Keith can be really nice and thoughtful sometimes, but when it comes to work, he’s a royal pain and too big for his britches.
